It was a hot day in the middle of June. People where gathering outside the church to gossip after the sermon. Karin was leading her mother thru the crowd towards their carriage. Her mother leaning heavily on Karin's arm, tired and sick.
Karin could her them, whispering about how weird she was, how unfitting it was for a young lady to go to the university, how she should be at home taking care of her mother, how she should be looking for a fiancé instead of wasting her youth reading books.
She didn't care. She had heard it all before.
"The Baron must have been mad to raise such a crazy daughter."
Karin clenched her fists, left her mother behind as she stormed against the old woman.
"How dare you speak of my father that way?! You old worthless hag, you are no one. My father was a kind and wise man, not only to his family but to everyone who worked for him. You talking ill of him is like spitting on his grave. I don't care what you say about me, but you don't get to bad mouth my father the Baron, especially not infront of my mother, his wife. Shame on you!"
To Karins surprise people, the workers and their wifes, started applauding. The old woman fled in shame. The priest nodded his approval. Her mother couldn't help but smile.
