Drabble: Morning

There’s a light knock on the door followed by Siirka’s gentle call “Lady Karin, are you awake?”. What mood will she be in today? Is she going to be hungover? Is she alone in there?

Karin wakes up from her slumber and urges Siirka to come in, longing for the coffee that will be on the tray she brings. She feels moderately well rested. No matter how unfortunate the name Blubber might be, that goldfish really helps more than she ever thought it would.

“Good morning Lady Karin, have you slept well?” She places the tray on one of the tables beside Karin’s bed, pours a cup and offers it to her newly awakened mistress.

“Good enough.” Karin accepts the cup with a grateful smile, blows on the steaming hot coffee and takes a sip. “Mmm, you really do know how to make good coffee. You’re worth your weight in gold just for that!” She can hardly remember how she dealt with having to wake up without Siirka’s excellent brew any longer.

“Thank you.” Karin is always so kind to her, no matter what. She doesn’t want to think about what would have happened if Karin hadn’t saved her that day...

“Any letters?” Karin says as she lights a cigarette to go with her coffee. The first cigarette of the day is always the best one, or possibly the one after dinner.

“A few.” She hands them to Karin with a smile. She wished that Karin wouldn’t smoke in bed, she is scared that she will start a fire.

“Thanks,” Karin flips through the small stack of envelopes, “go run the bath would you.” She drains her cup in one go and puts it on the tray.

Siirka knows Karin well enough not to ask if she would like a refill. She just pours the coffee and smiles. “Certainly, anything else?”

“Not at the moment.” Karin nods absentmindedly reaching for her letter opener, blowing smoke thru her nose.

Siirka exits, leaving Karin to her coffee and letters.
