Drabble: The crying maid
Jun. 9th, 2013 11:11 pm“Ouch,” Karin cries out as Siirka manages to pull on her hair for the second time whilst arranging Karins coiffeur for the evening. She’s going out with a very promising new adept at the Hall for some drinks and laughs, showing the girl a good time and hopefully make an ally.
“I’m so sorry my Lady.” The girl is close to tears and her usually so stable hands tremble as she drops the brush. “I’m so sorry.”
Karin turns to face her maid. “What’s wrong,” her voice one part annoyance, one part care. “Have I grown tentacles or something?”
Siirka dives after the brush, a perfect way to hide that tears now are trickling down her face in a steady stream. “Not at all my Lady, you look as perfect as ever.”
Even if Karin can’t see the tears, she can hear the sobs. Siirka might be her maid, but their relationship are more like a friendship than one of master and servant, and Karin can’t help but worry. “Then what on earth is the matter Siirka? What’s wrong?”
“I... there was...” the poor girl can hardly speak, choked up by her crying. “Devil... there was a devil.”
Karin's voice drops to its lowest. “Where was this devil you speak of?”
“At the door,” Siirka cries. “I sent her away.”
Karin takes hold of her maids hand, “What did it want?” If this shocks her she keeps it well hidden.
“I don’t know.” She shakes her head, holding on to Karin’s hand as if it was an anchor, keeping her steady. “She left a message... I didn’t read it... I didn’t want to give it to you. I know how much you hate them.” Nonetheless she hands Karin the note.
Karin takes it with her free hand and reads it. “Oh.” She looks up at Siirka. “No need to worry my dear, they just asked me once again if I wouldn’t help one of them to become more... accustomed to the ways of... you know what, it doesn’t matter. I have refused, and I will keep on refusing.” She stands and embraces Siirka. “You know I’d never have any dealings with them, they are vile creatures that shouldn’t be allowed on the streets of London.”
“I was so scared... I thought it would...” her voice muffled as she leans her head against Karin’s shoulder.
“Shh, shh. There’s nothing to worry about.” Karin strokes her scared maids back and her voice is as soothing as it can be. “They can’t harm you here, you are safe.”
“I know, I’m sorry.” She starts to get a grip of herself again, straightening herself and drying her eyes.
“No need to be sorry.” Karin says with a smile as she once again takes a seat at the vanity. “Now please be more careful with that brush, and make haste, I don’t wish to be late.”
