Notes, letters, gifts, it's all received at the Ladies townhouse at Old Paradise Row 7. except for the occasional fan mail delivered to her loge at the Hall. Do feel free to drop a note.
Trunk after trunk is delivered to the Baroness home. Opening them will reveal it's mostly startling amounts of money and a gentleman's wardrobe. Clothes easily recognised for Karin as they belong to her cousin. There is a very short note as well;
It is hand delivered by a courier from "Hapels & Sons, Bakers," a red box decorated with roses and tied with black ribbons. It is some half-foot square, and one half that height.
It opens to reveal a tiny cake shaped like a cat and covered in pink frosting! Little dots of chocolate mark it's eyes.
It also comes with a note:
"I hope you enjoy eating my little pink pussy. -S. B."
By bat, a sketch is delivered, all pastels and thick lines of charcoal, bold colours lain into a picture of a half-remembered evening, a full page of the recumbent Swede, hair tousled and lips parted, flushed with the night before. The background is shadowy, dreamlike, only the outline of the swell of zee-light through what may be a porthole to indicate location. The faint illumination strikes the curve of skin, the sweet pale lines of the Lady Adelsward.
The picture is unsigned - but who else could have sent this?
In an angled, elegant hand across fine white letterhead with the coat of arms of Attford-Fenwick, comes a hand-delivered message:
Felicitations Lady Adelsward~
I was just speaking of you the other day, and we should take some time to reconnect and discuss our favourite charity. Related to that, I was considering an event with an artistic flair. Clearly, the Nightengale of the North would be a fantastic add to something so themed. I did wonder if you would have interest in being a part of a collaborative artistic endeavor that would culminate in a lavish event later this year. I should like to engage the artists early to ensure that there is plenty of time. Please do me the favour of making your interest known by the end of this week.
I would be more than pleased to discuss both our favourite charity and this lavish artistic event, that I am of course eager to be part of, over tea perhaps?
There's a few suggestions of when a meeting could take place as well as the customary words of polite well wishing between friends before the letter ends with;
It's been a few days since the incident. For the first few days, correspondence went rather by the wayside, resulting in missed appointments and general mayhem; by now, however, personal correspondence and regular appointments have been comfortably delegated to Winch to handle, in Becquerel's absence.
The handwriting is fine and regal and widely spaced, and reads as follows:
23 April 1893

Dear Lady Adelswärd,
It has come to my attention that your regular appointment
with Monsieur Curie to engage in piano-lessons would more
normally take place this afternoon. As Monsieur Curie's
proxy I must send his regrets. He will be unable to attend
his lessons for a fortnight at least.
As you are a personal friend of Monsieur Curie's, it
behooves me to inform you in the same breath that
Monsieur Curie is in no physical condition to participate
owing to a recent injury. Should you wish to visit him in
his recovery, he is under the care of a physician at
the Merkel Estate, where the doctor is more consistently
able to look after him. I am available to you to make
arrangements for a visit with Ms Clement should you so
"Injured? And now staying at Olive's? What on earth could have happened?" she asks the letter who of course have no such answers for her.
Dear Mr. Winch,
Thank you for informing me of the situation. I would indeed want to visit him during his recovery if Monsieur Curie himself would be amenable to it and even though I count Miss Clement as a personal friend perhaps it is best if I leave the arrangements in your capable hands.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could inform me if there is anything in particular I could do to make these troubled times easier for Monsieur Curie or his household.
